Pro11 Cup Final 2016

The first Pro11 Cup Final was held on the 16th of December 2016 at the Pro11 Academy at The Sultan's School in Seeb. Dozens of spectators turned out to watch what was a truly remarkable game of football, an incredibly tight match that was a fitting end to weeks of competitive football between the Blue Team and the Red Team. The Blue Team was managed by Coach Peter and the Red Team by Coach Loz, with Coach Ghasan acting as match referee.

It all started well for the Blue Team when they took an impressive 2-0 lead but thanks to a penalty for handball and a well worked team goal, the Red Team found themselves right back into the mix at 2-2. In the last few minutes of the match the Blue Team appeared to have broken the Red Team's hearts when they edged into a 3-2 lead. However, the Red Team must really have listened to the 'never say die' team-talk at half-time as once again they came from behind to level the match at 3-3 in the dying seconds, in true Cup Final style!

Perhaps it was inevitable that such a match was to be decided in the most dramatic of ways, a tense penalty shoot-out in front of a spell-bound crowd. It was the Red Team who held their nerve the best, dispatching more of their penalties than the Blue Team, as every player on each team had to step up to the plate and take a penalty.

So, congratulations to the Red Team who won the trophy in true Cup Final fashion and commiserations to the Blue Team who came so close and who pushed the Red Team all the way. What a fantastic spectacle of football and well done to everyone involved. Let's have more of the same next year please!
